4 Tips to Keep in Mind When Guest Blogging

If you’re wondering what guest blogging is or why you should even care about it, then listen up. If you haven’t been guest blogging, you’ve been missing out on one of the best marketing tactics available today.

In it’s simplest form, guest blogging is the exchange of content from one blogger to another, for a site which the author does not own. Basically, you provide a post to a blogger to use on their site. They get free quality content and you get some exposure to their audience plus a link to your site (which equates to FREE traffic).

You need to follow some specific guidelines when guest blogging to ensure you get accepted and get the most benefit out of your work. I’m going to briefly discuss 4 here to help get you started.

Guest Blogging Tip #1: Completely Unique Content

This is NOT the time to use a rewritten article or an old post from the early days of your blog. Make it totally new and fresh. True, the audience may not have seen your content before; but you don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot by using boring rehashed content.

Guest Blogging Tip #2: Break Up Posts with Images

I’m talking about super cool and compelling images here. Ladies, don’t get mad at me….but pictures of beautiful women work great no matter if the audience is women or men. How many people do you think look at the picture below before reading anything I just said?

Guest Blogging Tip #3: Use Bullet Points

Make the post easy to skim through. Bullet points and sections are perfect for this. Notice how I use section headers to break up the monotony of the post? That makes the information you’re reading easier to “digest”.

Guest Blogging Tip #4: Provide Insane Value

Give your absolute best information. You really want to over-deliver when you’re guest blogging. You have to WOW the reader to compel them to care about you, care about what you have to say and ultimately visit your site. Make the post AMAZING.

There has been some backlash on guest blogging recently. The low brow people using guest blogging in a spammy manner have tainted those of us on the up and up. MyGuestBlog, one of the upstanding guest blogging sites, was (unfairly) slapped for providing a platform for guest bloggers. This has lead to a lot of people steering clear of guest blogging altogether. But there are still some who aren’t afraid to keep it up.

If you aren’t spooked by the bit of negative press surrounding guest blogging, you can find guest blogging opportunities by doing a simple search or a Google blog search and find blogs in your niche. Contact the owners and see if they accept guest bloggers.
